Spartans Finish Ninth At Alister MacKenzie

Fairfax, Calif. -- Justin Estrada fired a four-under 67 to help San Jose State jump from 12th to ninth place on the final day of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational on October 18.

The Spartans as a team shot a one-under 283 on the 6,718-yard par 71 Meadow Club in the final round bringing their total to 849 (-3) for the tournament.

"It was good to climb a few spots on the final day," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We played better in the last two rounds, but against this competition you need three good ones."

#19-ranked California and #2-ranked Oregon are co-champions after finishing dead even at a whopping 41-under par 811. Oregon's Eugene Wong won the tournament as an individual, shooting 65-63-67-195 (-18), five strokes ahead of California's Max Homa.

For San Jose State, Estrada posted four birdies and no bogies in his last 18 holes, putting him in a tie for seventh place at nine-under par. It's Estrada's second highest career finish and also his second inside the top-ten this season.

"Justin played a wonderful tournament for us," Kennaday said about the sophomore. "He improved over each round which is exactly what we're looking for our guys to do."

Jay Myers finished in a tie for 31st place individually after a one-over 72 in the final round brought his tournament total to 211 (-2).

Matthew Hovan shot his second 73 of the tournament on Tuesday and finished in 42nd place with a 214 (+1)

Christopher Lang had his lowest round of the week in the final round shooting an even-par 71 which left him at seven-over for the tournament and in a tie for 63rd place.

Daniel Semmler shot 76 in the final round and finished the tournament 20-over par and in 79th place.

Next up, San Jose State tees it up in their final competition of the fall at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. on October 24-25.
