Spartans Ninth At Alister MacKenzie Invitational

Fairfax, Calif. -- San Jose State shot a four-over par 288 in the final round of the Alister Mackenzie Invitational on October 16 in Fairfax, Calif.


The Spartans shot 284-284-288-856 (+4) on the 6,759-yard par 71 Meadow Club, finishing in a tie for 9th place out of 16 teams.


In San Jose State's fourth tournament this year Justin Estrada notched his second top-10 finish. A final-round 70 (-1) on Tuesday moved Estrada into a tie for ninth place on the player leader board. The junior from Yuba City, Calif., made 11 birdies and two eagles over the course of the 54-hole event and shot a career low 66 (-5) in the middle round. 


"I think this course just sets up well for Justin's game," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday.


Daniel Semmler shot a 73 (+2) in the final round with an eagle on the par-four 12th hole. Semmler hit a drive to about 80 yards from the flag and knocked it in cup for a two. Semmler was even par for the tournament and finished tied for 22nd place.


After a pair of 75's in the first two rounds Cody Blickensderfer finished up with an even-par 71. Blickensderfer finished in a tie for 59th with a total of 221 (+8).


Connor Covington shot 71-72-77-220 (+7) finishing in a tie for 56th and Taylor Bromley went 73-75-74-222 (+9) and tied for 61st.


"The wind wasn't really strong today, but it was just tricky," said Kennaday. "It was good to see some good wedge play from the guys because that's what we have been focusing on."


Tournament host and #1-ranked California according to GolfStat won the Alister MacKenzie Invitational by 20 shots at -46. San Francisco was second going -26. Brandon Hagy of California took the individual medalist honors shooting 64-62-72-207.


San Jose State tees it up next in the UTEP Minor Invitational at Butterfield Trail Golf Club in El Paso, Texas on October 26-27.
