Men's Golf 6th At Del Walker; Hubbard Top-10 Again

Long Beach, Calif.-----Mark Hubbard, Matt Montez and Peter Gibbs each posted an even par 71 for San Jose State University in the final round helping the Spartans finish sixth at the Del Walker Invitational men’s golf tournament.

San Jose State posted a 54-hole total of two-over par 854 on the par 71 Virginia Country Club course.  Hubbard led the way with his second top-10 finish in two tournaments this fall with a six-under par 207. His fifth-place finish is his best at the major college level. The sophomore from Denver tied for seventh in the team’s opener at the Windon Memorial earlier in the month.

All five Spartans posted one score of par or better at the Del Walker. Montez’s 71 gave him a 217 total and 33rd-place finish. Freshman Jay Myers, even par after 36 holes, tied for 38th place at 218. Stephan Stallowrth was under par after two rounds before tying for 47th place at 220. Gibbs bounced back with his even par round for a 60th place tie.

“Mark Hubbard played very well. We want to get at least four guys playing well at the same time. We have the capability of shooting low scores, but we have to capture team momentum,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.

Colorado State was an easy winner in the team competition with a tournament record 811. UC Irvine was second at 834. Long Beach State at 842 and Pacific and Texas San Antonio at 848 also were ahead of the Spartans.

Zahkai Brown was one of four Colorado State golfers to finish in the top-10 and was the runaway winner for medalist honors. Brown was 17-under par with a 196 total.

The Spartans are back in action, Monday, October 20, at the 54-hole Sycuan Collegiate Invitational in El Cajon, calif.
