Hot Hubbard Leads Men's Golf At Del Walker

Long Beach, Calif.-----Mark Hubbard, San Jose State’s top finisher in the Spartans’ first tournament of the season, continued his top-notch play with a six-under par 136 in the first two rounds of the Del Walker Invitational men’s golf tournament.

The sophomore from Denver is tied for fifth-place in the 75-player field that is playing the par-71 Virginia Country Club course. Hubbard’s one-day 36-hole total is the best by a San Jose State men’s golfer since current Canadian Tour pro Isaac Weintraub posted an eight-under par 136 for the first 36 holes of 2002 Wolf Pack Classic.

Hubbard was dynamic on the back nine of the course going seven under par without a bogey.

“Mark has been playing and competing well, but so have a number of others on the team. It’s about getting it done and we’re inching our way up on everybody,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday.

In the team competition, San Jose State is sixth in the 15-team field with a three-under par 565 score. Stephan Stallworth, playing in his first tournament of the season, and freshman Jay Myers both had second-round 70’s as part of the Spartans’ five-under par 279 team score. Stallworth is tied for 15th place at 141. Myers is tied for 25th at even-par 142.

Matt Montez at 146 and Peter Gibbs with a 154 round out the San Jose State entries in the Spartans’ second tournament of the season.

“It’s nice to see an under-par score. We struggled in the morning, but held it together (in the afternoon). It’s exciting to be on the upswing,” added the Spartans coach.

Colorado State set a tournament record with a 535 score, 20 strokes better than the previous team record of 555 set by Lamar University in 2004. UC Irvine and Texas San Antonio are tied for second at 556. Pacific at 559 and host Long Beach State at 562 also are ahead of the Spartans.

The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on October 17.
