Hubbard Top-10 At Windon Memorial Men's Golf

Glenview, Ill.-----San Jose State University’s Mark Hubbard posted his best finish in a college tournament tying for seventh place at the Windon Memorial men’s golf tournament hosted by Northwestern University.

Hubbard, a sophomore from Denver, Colo., posted a 54-hole total of even par 213. He was one of six golfers in the 81-player field who had two or more 18-hole scores under par on the par 71, 7,059-yard North Shore Country Club Course. Hubbard was among the tournament leaders in par-4 and par-5 scoring, playing those 45 holes five-under par with eight of his 10 tournament birdies coming on those holes.

“Mark played brilliantly. At times, he didn’t hit the ball well, but he kept his game together and kept focused. He competed for 54 holes and stayed mentally tough throughout the tournament,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday about Hubbard, whose best finish as a freshman was 20th.

Indiana’s Jorge Campillo captured the individual title with a 205 total that featured a final-round, eight-under par 63. John Hahn of Kent State, the only player in the field under par for each of the three rounds, was second at 207. Just six players were under par for 54 holes.

In the team competition, San Jose State finished 13th at 890 and was in front of Santa Clara, the only other West Coast team in the 15-team field. Illinois, with two players among the top-10 individual finishers, completed a start-to-finish victory with an 843 total. Indiana was second at five-under par 848.

“We didn’t have a very good day,” added the Spartans’ coach about the final 18 holes that saw San Jose State post a 301 team score. “This was our first tournament and we needed to find out about ourselves in tournament competition. We’ve got plenty to build on and a good idea of what we need to do.”

Matt Montez, who played even par golf for 36 holes, finished at 221. Peter Gibbs at 227, Jay Myers at 231 and Aaron Conrad at 242 rounded out the San Jose State scoring.

The Spartans return to action, Thursday, October 16, at the Del Walker Intercollegiate hosted by Long Beach State.
