Men's Golf Finishes 3rd At Rees Jones

Daufuskie Island, S.C.-----With all five of its players in the top-25, San Jose State University had its highest finish of the season placing third at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.

The Spartans completed 54 holes with a 912 team score on the par 72, Haig Point Golf Club course. San Jose State turned in the second best team score of the final round positing a 306. Only Liberty, which tied for first with Kennesaw State, with the day's low team score at 296 was better on the last day than the Spartans. Liberty and Kennesaw State finished as co-champions with a 902 total. Wofford was fourth at 924 and host Michigan State was fifth at 934.

San Jose State's third-place finish was one better than its fourth at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational a week previously and the fifth at the season-opening Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Washington. The three top-five finishes in a row is a first for the Spartans since John Kennaday took over as head coach in 2005.

Jay Myers led San Jose State with a final round 74, the second lowest score by any player for the last 18 holes, and a season-best fifth place finish at 222. Mark Hubbard tied for sixth at 225 for his second top-10 finish in seven days. Hubbard, for the second tournament in a row, and Myers shared top honors for best play on the par-5 holes at three-under par.

Matthew Hovan was in a five-way tie for 14th at 232. Nick Brown, 24th at 236, and Justin Estrada, tied for
25th at 237, completed the Spartan competitors.

"The great thing about this course is it is the most difficult one in college golf. It teaches you a lot about what you've got to do to get better and have an all-around game," said Kennaday who noted the Spartans have very few opportunities during the season to play on Bermuda greens.

None of the 55 players were under par in the final round and there were just six under-par rounds among the 165 played. Matt Nagy of Kennesaw State finished first at even par 216. Robert Karlsson of Liberty and Chandler Brazeal of Wofford tied for second at 220.

The Spartans return to action, Monday, October 18, at the 54-hole Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by the University of California at the Meadow Club in Corte Madera, Calif.
