Montez & Hubbard Lead Men's Golf At Windon Memorial

Glenview, Ill.-----Playing in his first tournament in a year-and-a-half, Matt Montez is tied for eighth place in the Windon Memorial men’s golf tournament the season opener for San Jose State University.

    The senior from Sacramento, who redshirted the 2007-08 season, posted scores of 72 and 70 on the par 71, 7,059-yard North Shore Country Club course. Right behind him in a tie for 11th place is sophomore Mark Hubbard at one-over par 143. Hubbard had one of the best scores of the day, a three-under 68 in the morning round.

    “Matt and Mark played brilliantly. They really did,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. “It’s great to have Matt back. He adds a lot to the team.

    “Mark had a little trouble hitting the fairway in the second round, but, all in all, he played great all day.”

    The Spartans have a 589 team score are in ninth place among the 12 teams that completed 36 holes before darkness halted play. Indiana, playing even par golf, New Mexico and Coastal Carolina did not finish their second round.

    Sophomore Peter Gibbs posted a 151 followed by Jay Myers, making his major college debut, at 155. Aaron Conrad, another fifth-year senior, rounded out the Spartans’ lineup at 161.

    Illinois is the team leader at 559. The Illini have three of their five players at or under par. Matt Hoffman is the tournament leader at 135. He has a three-stroke lead over Kent State’s John Hahn for the individual championship.

    Of the teams that finished, Kent State is second at 577, 18 strokes behind Illinois. Host Northwestern is tied with Missouri for third place at 578.

    “We played okay in the morning and hung with the field. We did not play well in the afternoon,” said the Spartans’ coach whose team was tied for sixth place after 18 holes. “We’ve got some work to do. We can’t take anything for granted. We’ve got to make every swing count and work at it.”

    The 54-hole tournament concludes on October 6 with a third round after nine golfers finish as many as three holes to complete the second round.
