Spartans Set Records At Dash Thomas Memorial

Eagle, Idaho -- It was a record-setting day for the San Jose State men's golf team as the Spartans posted a 26-under par 542 for 36 holes at the Dash Thomas Memorial in Eagle, Idaho on September 26.

The 542 team score on the par 71, 6,890-yard Banbury Golf Course gave the Spartans an 18-stroke lead over Idaho at the end of the day and shattered the previous San Jose State 36-hole low score of 553 set in 2006 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.

The Spartans also shot a second-round 265 (-19), breaking a 13-year-old school record  by eight shots for lowest 18-hole team score set at the 1997 NCAA West Regional Championship.

"We finished strong and stuck to the game plan," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "This is what happens when a team works hard every day to try and get better."

Jay Myers heads into the final round of the tournament in first place. An opening-round 66 followed by a 65 in the afternoon put the senior at 11-under 131, tying an all-time San Jose State record for lowest 36-hole score in relation to par set by Arron Oberholser in 1996.

Another senior, Matthew Hovan, also fired two rounds in the 60's. He shot 69-66-135. At seven-under par, he sits in fifth place individually.

Christopher Lang and Daniel Semmler were also under par after 36 holes. Lang shot 73-66-139 and sits in a tie for ninth on the leader board at three-under, while Semmler in a tie for 21st went 73-68-141 (-1).

Justin Estrada's first round of 69 contributed to San Jose State's seven out of eight scores in the 60's that were counted for the tournament.  Estrada shot a 74 in his second round and at one-over 143 sits in a tie for 21st individually in the field of 63.

"I'm proud of these guys," said Kennaday. "But we have a lot of golf ahead of us and we must continue to work hard and play the best we can."

18 holes remain at The Dash Thomas Memorial. Tee times for the final round on September 27 begin at 8:00 a.m.
