Pullman, Wash.-----San Jose State University's Ryan Collins and Nick Brown were two of the five players in the 88-man field to post a final round sub-70 score at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate men's golf tournament.
The two Spartans both recorded three-under par 69's on the par 72, 7,305-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club course to finish with identical rounds of 75-72-69 for an even par 216 and tie for 22nd place.
For Collins, a senior from Lafayette, Calif., it was his best performance and finish in a major college tournament. His previous best was an 18-over par, 36th place finish at the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., as a freshman. Until the September 13 second round, Collins, with his 72, had not recorded an 18-hole score of par or less.
Brown, a junior from Rocklin, Calif., also had a breakthrough tournament. The 2010 U.S. Publinx qualifier posted his first under par score in 22 rounds of college competition and had his best finish since placing eighth at the 2009 Palouse Collegiate.
San Jose State, as a team, finished fifth at nine-under par 855 in the 16-team tournament. The Spartans were under par every round and were one of the five teams in the field that matched or bettered their second round team score. The Palouse Ridge course played 1.56 strokes harder in the final round.
Host Washington State cruised to the team title with an 827. Idaho at 839, Portland at 847 and Santa Clara with an 850 were ahead of San Jose State.
Damian Telles and Jarred Bossio of Idaho finished one-two in the individual race. Telles' 65 was the low score of the final round and gave him a 201 total for 54 holes. Bossio, the second round co-leader, was second at 203.
Jay Myers, the first round co-leader, was the top San Jose State finisher tying for 12th place at 212. Mark Hubbard also was in the top-20 for the Spartans tying for 16th place at 214.
San Jose State returns to action, Monday, September 27, competing in the 54-hole Mark Simpson Memorial Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado.
