Men's Golf Tied For 5th After 36 At Palouse Collegiate

Pullman, Wash.-----In his first tournament in the San Jose State lineup, sophomore Matthew Hovan recorded seven birdies in an opening round three-under par 69 leading the Spartans to a fifth-place start at the Palouse Collegiate men’s golf tournament.

 

            Hovan recorded the only under-par score for San Jose State during the 36 holes of play by the five Spartans on the par 72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club course. San Jose State posted a team score of 591 and is tied with UC Davis.

 

            Sacramento State is the leader in the 12-team field with a 579 heading into the final 18 holes scheduled to begin on September 15. Host Washington State is second at 580. Idaho at 585 and Loyola Marymount at 586 also are ahead of San Jose State.

 

            Individually, Hovan is one of three San Jose State players among the top-20. He is tied for eighth at 145 after an afternoon score of 76. Two more Spartan sophomores, Jay Myers and Nick Brown, are tied for 15th place at 147.

 

            Junior Mark Hubbard and senior Drew Nottenkamper posted 153 scores. The Spartans counted each player’s 76 in the team scoring format that tallies the best four scores in each round from five players.

 

            Washington State’s Kevin Tucker is the individual leader with a six-under par 138. His second-round 66, which included a pair of eagles, is the low round of the tournament. Only seven players in the 78-player field matched or bettered par.
