Covington, Estrada Make Top-Five; Spartans Third

Pullman, Wash. -- San Jose State finished strong with a seven-under par 281 in the final round of the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash., on September 11. The Spartans finished in third place out of 11 teams behind Connor Covington’s career-low round of 70. (-2)

All five Spartans had their lowest 18-hole score on Tuesday and their 281 was the second-lowest team score of the entire tournament on the 7,308-yard par 72 Palouse Ridge Golf Club. A 54-hole total of 890 (+26) put San Jose State 15 strokes behind the winner Washington State at 875 (+11).

"The guys had a nice round today," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. "We have a lot to learn. They stuck to the gameplan and put the team in good position."

Covington, Justin Estrada and Cody Blickensderfer all finished under par for the day.

Estrada was the low man turning in a four under 68. Four birdies on the back-nine help move him up eight spots into a tie for fourth.

Like Estrada, Covington also fired a 32 on the back-nine. He finished in a tie for second place overall after his career-low 70 (-2) Tuesday. He shot a one over 217 for the tournament, four strokes behind the winner Hank Frame of Washington State.

"There wasn't anything easier about the back nine today," Covington said. "We just knew we had to finish strong."

The Spartans were eight-under par with 12 birdies on the back nine in round three.

Blickensderfer played his last 13 holes at four-under par on his way to a 71 (-1) in the final round of his first collegiate golf tournament. Blickensderfer shot 75-78-71-224 (+8) and finished in 12th place.

Daniel Semmler shot even par on his last round bringing his total to 233 (+17). Semmler finished tied with teammate Taylor Bromley in 40th place. Bromley, also in his first major college golf tournament, shot 73 Tuesday giving him a 13-shot improvement between round one and three.

"I'm proud of the way everybody played," Kennaday said.

San Jose State is right back in action starting this Sunday, September 16 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa.
