Men's Golf Moves Up At St. Mary's Invitational Opener

Pebble Beach, Calif.-----With one of the better team scores in the second round, San Jose State University moved into 13th place heading into the final round of the St. Mary’s Invitational men’s golf tournament.

The Spartans posted a two-over par 290-team score on the par 72 Poppy Hills Golf Course, a 21-stroke improvement over the opening round of the season for a 601 total. Three of the five San Jose State players, freshman Peter Gibbs making his major college debut, sophomore Stephan Stallworth and senior Jon Tringale, all matched or bettered par in round two. Gibbs and Stallworth led the way with one-under par 71’s. Tringale had his best round since October 2005 by matching par on the Poppy Hills Course.

Baylor is the team leader in the 18-team field with a 581 score. Alabama Birmingham is second at 585. Wisconsin, third at 586; Memphis, at 587; and Santa Clara at 589 also are in the top five.

Brad Smith of Alabama Birmingham and Wesley Williams of Baylor are the co-leaders after 36 holes with 141 scores. Only six players in the 95-man field are under par with 18 holes to go on September 11.

Gibbs is the top Spartan at 148 and is tied for 25th place. Stallworth, a 2007 second-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection, is tied for 33rd at 149.
