Brown Keeps Chin Up After Round One

BANDON, Ore. -- Battling the elements and a 6,832-yard Bandon Trails golf course, San Jose State's Nick Brown shot a 14-over par 84 on day one of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship in Bandon, Ore.

"It was tough out there for everyone today," said the Rocklin, Calif., native. "The weather made the course much harder. Even some of my good shots got punished by the conditions."

The Rocklin High graduate is tied for 140th place in the field that will be narrowed to 64 players after tomorrow's second round.

Devon Purser of Clearfield, Utah and Derek Ernst from Clovis, Calif., are 18-hole co-leaders after shooting one-under 69.

"Tomorrow is a new day," Brown said. "I'll have a solid second round and hopefully get just inside that cut by the end of the day."

Brown's tee time for round two on June 28 is 7:50 a.m. on the Old Macdonald course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
