San Jose State's Matthew Hovan finished the second round of the California State Amateur Championship with a nine-over par 80 on Olympic Club's Lake Course on June 21.
A combined 11-over par through two rounds put Hovan in a tie for 110th place and eight strokes outside the cutline to advance to match play.
"Things just went a little shaky for me today," said the Redwood City, Calif., native. "I was really happy with my round yesterday and the tournament has been a great experience for me again this year."
Philip Chian of Covina, Calif., led the field through stroke play at six-under par and will be accompanied by 31 others inside the cut as the tournament shifts to match play.
"This was a great tournament to be a part of," said Hovan, who will be a senior when school resumes in the fall. "I'm still confident in my game and I'm looking forward to playing more this summer."
