San Jose State's Matthew Hovan finished with an opening-round 73 (+2) at the California State Amateur Championship at Olympic Club on June 20.
The Redwood City, Calif., native is in a tie for 43rd place in the field that began with 156 and will be narrowed to just 32 following the second round.
On the front side of the par 71 6,934-yard Lake Course, Hovan came in with a 34 (-1), with birdies at numbers one and four, and a dropped shot at number two.
Hovan double-bogeyed the par 4, 12th and gave up another on the 14th going out with a 39 (+3).
Philip Chian of Covina Calif., sits atop the leader board after firing a four-under 67 on the 6,752 yards Ocean Course.
Hovan will tee it up in the second round of stroke play on the Ocean Course tomorrow at 8:50 a.m.
Finishing in the top-32 will advance Hovan to the third day of the tournament marking the beginning round of match play lasting until Saturday.
