Spartans End Season In 11th At NCAA Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. -- San Jose State University concluded the NCAA Stanford Regional with a seven-over par 287 in the final round at the Stanford Golf Course on May 19.

The 12th seeded Spartans finished with an 854 (+14) on the 6,727-yard par 70 course landing them in 11th place of 13 teams. The top five schools at the end of the tournament each notched a spot in the NCAA Championship on May 28-June 2. The University of Central Florida finished 19 strokes ahead of the Spartans at -5 and took the fifth and final qualifying spot.

California played the final 18 holes at 11-under par and is the Stanford Regional Champion at 25-under, followed by San Diego State (-19), UAB (-10), and Stanford (-8).

For San Jose State, seniors Jay Myers and Matthew Hovan in their final rounds of the season each shot an even-par 70. Myers got up and down for birdie on his final hole, the par-four ninth, after a crushing drive to short-wedge distance for the second day in a row. Hovan also finished strong with a birdie on his 16th hole to get the round back to even before two consecutive pars.

"It felt very strange and surreal to walk up the last fairway with Jay today," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. I've walked so many fairways with all of these seniors, Jay, Matt (Hovan), Chris (Lang) and Nick (Brown). I'm proud of all of them and it's going to be different without them."

For the tournament, Myers shot 71-67-70-208 (-2) and finished in a tie for 18th while Hovan shot 80-68-70-218 (+8) finishing tied for 55th.

Justin Estrada also finished tied for 55th on the individual leader board. He was the Spartans' low man after an opening round of 68, then shot 71-79 the last two rounds for a 218.

Also for the Spartans, Christopher Lang shot 72-74-73-219 (+9) and finished 61st in his final competition as a senior, while Connor Covington shot 76-76-74-226 (+16) tying for 72nd.

"We fell short of our goal and that stings a little bit," said Kennaday. "We had a record setting season and did a lot of great things, but we want to be playing next week. We have so much to be proud of and I know these guys gave it their very best all season long."

San Jose State ends a four-win season with a 73.39 team stroke-average. Myers led the squad averaging 71.38 strokes over 39 rounds, barely under the Spartans' all-time low stroke-average of 71.35 put up by Arron Oberholser in the 1995-96 season.
