Blick Fires 71 At Last Day Of NCAA Regional

Tempe, Ariz. – Bouncing back from a disappointing 77 in the second round of the 2013 Men’s Golf Regional Championship, San Jose State men’s golfer Cody Blick shot his second one-over par 71 in three rounds and finished the Championship in a tie for 50th place.

Blick teed off on the 498-yard par-four 10th hole for the second straight day.  After bogeying and double bogeying the hole in the previous two rounds, he finally solved it with a solid par.  That started a string of five straight holes in which he reached the green in regulation.

The first four holes he parred and on his fifth, the 527-yard par-five 14th, he carded his first birdie of the day.  He was over the green in two and found himself in a bunker.  He blasted out to seven feet and rolled in the birdie putt to go one-under.

He followed the 14th with pars at 15 and 16.  On the 581-yard par-5 17th he missed his first fairway of the day, to the left side, and put his second shot 40 yards short of the green.  His approach shot checked up and he was left with a 31-foot birdie putt, which he banged into the center of the cup to go two-under after eight holes.

On the par-four 471-yard 18th, he made what would turn out to be the first of two “good” bogeys on the day.  He hit his tee shot into the water hazard running up the left side of the fairway and had to drop about 400 yards away from the green.  His third ended up 115 yards from the pin.  His fourth shot came up about a foot shy of the green.  From there he pulled out his putter, canned a 27 footer to save bogey and make the turn at one-under 35.

He opened his back nine with three straight pars.  On the fourth hole, his 13th of the day, Blick missed the fairway to the left and put his second shot in a water hazard that protects the green.  He dropped 80 yards back and played his fourth shot to eight feet.  From there he rolled in the putt for his second “good” bogey and fell to even par.

After two more pars on his 14th and 15th holes, Blick came to the 155-yard par-three 7th.

His tee shot went over the green and he chipped his second shot back past the hole.  It took two putts to get down from there for a bogey four and a one-over total.

Blick came home in par, par on the final two holes for a one-over 71 and a three-round total of 219 (+9).  He finished in a tie for 50th place.

UCF’s Greg Eason, who led after the second round earned the individual medalist honors with a 12-under 198.  Dustin Korte of Austin Peay will advance to the NCAA Championship as the low individual not among the top-five teams.  He finished with a three-round total of 204 (-6)

UCLA, Georgia, UCF, Texas A&M and Arizona State all advance to the NCAA Championship in Atlanta, Georgia.  UCLA won the Regional Championship with a 30-under 810.
