Blick One-Over In Solid Round At NCAA Regional

Tempe, Ariz. – Cody Blick, playing as an individual, shot a one-over 71 in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tempe Regional Men’s Golf Championship and is tied with 14 other golfers for 28th place.

Blick opened with birdies on the second and fourth holes to get to two-under on the par 70, 7036-yard Karsten Golf Course.  On number two, he hit a 17-footer and then rolled in an 11-foot put on four.

On the par-four fifth, he was off the green after two shots and missed an eight-foot putt to save par.  He got the stroke right back on the par-three sixth with a birdie and then chipped in from 12 feet off the seventh green to get to three-under.

But, bogeys on eight and nine left Blick at one-under 29 at the turn.

He opened his back nine with a double-bogey, but settled himself with pars on 11 and 12 and then knocked in an eight-foot putt to get back to even par through 13 holes.

Two holes later, on the 457-yard par 4 15th, Blick made what would turn out to be the first of three crucial putts down the stretch.  On the 15th, it was a 10-footer to save par.

Then on 16, a par-three with water down the right side, he put his tee ball in the hazard.  After a drop, his third shot ended up 18 yards from the pin.  Blick canned the uphill putt to save bogey.

He parred 17, a 581-yard par 5, and then on 18 put his tee shot in a fairway bunker.  His second shot came up 30-yards short of the green and third was 21 feet below the hole.  He rolled in the put, which broke to the right at the hole and got into the clubhouse with a 71.

Dustin Korte, of Austin Peay, and UCLA’s Pontus Widegren are tied at the top of the individual leaderboard.  Each shot a six-under 64 and lead Greg Easton of UCF by a stroke.

UCLA leads the team competition by 10 strokes after shooting a 12-under 268.  Duke University is in second place at two-under.

With the top-five teams advancing to the NCAA Championship, eight of the 14 teams competing are currently inside the cut line.

One individual, who is not a member of one of the top-five teams, will also advance to the NCAA Championship.  After the first of three rounds, Blick is three shots behind Fresno State’s Rufie Fessler, who currently holds that distinction at two-under 68.

Play resumes Friday with the second round.  Blick tees off at 9:12 a.m. from the 10th tee.  Fans can follow the action on
