Stanford, Calif. - San Jose State's Justin Estrada shot a two-under par 68 at the Stanford University Golf Course and is in a tie for seventh place after the first round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Golf Regional on Thursday.
Teeing off on 10th hole of the 6,742 yard, par 70 course, Estrada recorded a bogey and birdie in his first three holes and was even through five. He then put together back-to-back birdies and finished his opening nine at minus-two. He birdied the third hole, his 12th of the day, to get to three-under before giving a stroke back on the eighth hole, his 17th to finish at two-under.
"The course definitely played easier in the morning than it did in the afternoon," said Estrada. "I struck the ball well all day and think I hit 14 of 18 greens (in regulation)."
Jay Myers also played well on the front, recording two birdies, including a 40-footer on his third hold and he made the turn at two-under. But a back side of four bogeys and a birdie got him into the club house at plus-one.
"No excuses," Myers, the 2012 WAC individual medalist, said after the round. "I lost my swing on the second nine and just didn't get it done."
As a team the Spartans finished the day in a tie for 10th place (287) with Oregon State and Southeastern Louisiana. San Francisco leads the tournament with a 273.
"The pins were available today, but our execution was wasn't there," said head coach John Kennaday. "We have to take things one hole at a time and improve over the next 36 holes.
Christopher Lang went out in 35, with a birdie and bogey, and came home in 72, two-over par. Connor Covington shot a 76 and Matthew Hovan finished with an 80.
LSU's Sang Yi and BYU's Zachary Blair are the low individuals, recoding four-under 66's
The second 18-holes of the 54-hole event continue on Friday, May 18 with the Spartans teeing off starting at 8:55 a.m. on the 10th hole. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
