Ground Broken on Spartan Golf Complex

May 13, 2016

The San José State University Athletics Department broke ground on the Spartan Golf Complex on South Campus on Friday, May 13.

Speakers during the ceremony included Athletics Director Gene Bleymaier, incoming San José State President Mary Papazian, President of Blach Construction Mike Blach, Spartan women’s golfer Arielle Caronna, Spartan men’s golfer Scott Munger and donors Rich and Cindy Thawley.

After the speeches, select dignitaries participated in a ceremonial shoveling of dirt.  Then, Munger, men’s golfer Brett Thawley and women’s golfer My Leander hit ceremonial first golf shots.

The $10.2 million project will be the first-ever on-campus training facility for the San José State men’s and women’s golf programs.  The entire project will be funded by private giving, including a $5 million lead gift commitment from the Thawleys, who met and graduated from San José State.
