San Jose, Calif. - Cody Blick, a freshman from Danville, Calif., was the Western Athletic Conference’s, and one of the nations, most decorated collegiate golfer in 2013. In awards handed out after the last week’s championship, Blick earned conference’s Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, as well as, first team All-WAC selection.
With all 29 Division I conference championships determined and 22 announcing year end awards, just Blick and Texas’ Brandon Stone, who competes in the Big 12 Conference, earned Freshman, Player of the Year and all-conference distinction this year.
Blick is the first San Jose State men’s golfer to earn Freshman of the Year recognition from the WAC and the first Spartan to earn both the conference’s Freshman and Player of the Year honors in the same year. The last WAC men’s golfer to earn both awards in one year was Nevada’s Taylor Coffman in 2007.
“Cody is very deserving of the awards,” head coach John Kennaday said last week after the WAC Championship Tournament. “He quietly beat a lot of very good, ranked players this year. He’s played outstanding for us and will continue to get better and better. He’s worked very hard and made some changes to his game, which is hard to do.”
