Spartans Take Lead At WAC Championship

HENDERSON, Nev. -- San Jose State took over the lead in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Championship on May 1. The Spartans shot 291 (+3) as a team in the second round and played holes 17 and 18 four-under par en route to taking the 36-hole lead.

"I am really proud of our guys today," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. "Today we put together a great overall team performance."

The Spartans lead four-time defending WAC Champion New Mexico State by two strokes and third place Fresno State by seven strokes.

Seniors Jay Myers and Matthew Hovan both sit inside the top-five on the player leader board with 18 holes remaining.

Myers was under par for the second consecutive round shooting a 71. He birdied the 18th hole to get into a tie for second place at four under, two strokes behind the leader Justin Shin of New Mexico State.

Hovan turned in a one-over par 73 in round two but remains one of just four players under par for the tournament at one under. Hovan is in fourth place alone on the leader board.

Justin Estrada also carded a 73 on Tuesday bringing him up to 21st place and Christopher Lang followed closely with a 74. Lang played his final three holes two-under par with an eagle at the par-five 17th and is tied for 24th place.

Also for San Jose State, Connor Covington shot 75 and dropped back just one spot from yesterday into a tie for 13th.

"It is going to take another complete team effort tomorrow in order to pull this one out," Kennaday said. "We're going to stick to the game plan and see what happens."
