Men's Golf Moves Into Second Place At WAC

Henderson, Nev. – Recording the second lowest score of the day, the San Jose State men’s golf team made the biggest move up the leader board, from sixth place to a tie for second, after 36 holes of the 2013 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

The Spartans, the defending WAC Champions, finished today’s round, which was buffeted by 15-20 mile per hour winds throughout, at 17-over 305 and a two-round total of 601 (+25).  They are tied with UT Arlington in second place among 10 teams vying for this year’s title and the conference’s automatic bid the NCAA Championship.

Daniel Semmler recorded the best round of the day for San Jose State at the 7,313 yard, par 72 Rio Secco Golf Club.  He was two-under through 14 holes after birdies on the third, seventh and 11th holes and a bogey on five.  A quadruple bogeyed on 15 droped to two-over.  A birdie on 16 got one stroke back, but a double bogey on 17 left him at three-over (75) for the day.  Semmler’s two-round total is 151 (+7) and ties him for 17th place.

Cody Blick also reached the 15th tee in good shape, at one-over.  He had birdies on five and 13 bookending bogeys on seven, nine and 11.  He double bogeyed 15 then carded bogeys on 17 and 18 for a five-over 77 and 36-hole total of 149 (+5).  Blick is in a five-way tie for ninth place.

Landon Polterock struggled from the outset.  He triple-bogeyed the second hole and recorded only one birdie, on the 18, en route to a seven-over 79.   He and two others are in a tie for 14th place.

Connor Covington made the turn at one-over.  He bogeyed three of his first four before birding holes six and eight for a 37 going out.  He had three bogeys in the first five holes on the backside, but couldn’t get any of them back and finished with a 76 and a two-round total of 153 (+9).  He sits in a 23rd-place tie.

Justin Estrada recorded a one birdie, on the sixth hole, and was even par through seven, but couldn’t get anything going after that and finished with a five-over 77.  Through two rounds he is 11-over 155 (+11) and in a tie for 31st place.

New Mexico State continues to lead after 36 holes with a two-round total of 584 (+8) and holds a 17-shot lead over the Spartans and UT Arlington.  UTSA’s J.J. Lindsey and a pair of New Mexico State players, Kenneth Fadke and Willie Hogan, are tied for the lowest individual score after two rounds.  The three are each at one-over 145 and have a two-shot advantage over a group of four players at three-over 147.

The final round is Wednesday, May 1, with the day’s first tee time set for 7:00 a.m.  The Spartans first tee time will be 9:00 a.m. Fans can follow the action at
