Valentine & Stallworth Finish Top-10 At WAC Men's Golf

San Jose, Calif.-----Rosco Valentine had the day’s low score, a two-under par 70, highlighting San Jose State University’s final round in the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Valentine, a junior from Auckland, New Zealand, had three birdies, three bogeys and an eagled the fifth hole. He was five-under par after 10 holes and was one of only two players under par for the last 18 holes on the par 72 Cinnabar Hills Golf Club course.

“I was driving the ball really well. I started to read the greens very well and putts started to drop. I was collaborating with coach (John Kennaday) on the (putting) lines and the pace. I got off to a pretty hot start, but struggled a little bit coming in on the later holes with the wind. All in all, I was pretty happy with my two-under,” said Valentine, who finished fourth at the WAC Championship for the second year in a row with a 221 total.

Valentine was joined in the top-10 by teammate Stephan Stallworth. The Spartans’ team leader in stroke average posted a 75 for a 224 and finished in a tie for sixth place.

In the team competition, the Spartans finished sixth at 926. New Mexico State won the team title with an 891.

“We’re far more capable than what we posted this spring. I just know we’re not where we want to be and we have a lot of work to do,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday.

Boise State, the second place finisher, had a team total of 896. Fresno State was third at 922. Idaho was fourth at 919. Defending champion Nevada was fifth at 920 in the nine-team tournament.

Boise State’s Troy Merritt, the national leader in stroke average at 69.21, captured his seventh tournament victory of the season and fifth in a row in a six-week period with a 209 total. His final round 71 with four birdies and three bogeys was the only other under-par round along with Valentine’s 70.

Grant Doverspike of Fresno State was second at 219 and Kevin Lozares of New Mexico State, was third at 220.
