Polterock & Spartans Sixth At WAC Championship

Henderson, Nev. – Landon Polterock fired a season-best one-under par 71 and is in a five-way tie for sixth place and leads the San Jose State men’s golf team after the opening 18 holes of the 2013 Club Glove Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Polterock had birdies on the second and ninth holes of the Rio Secco Golf Club and made the turn at one-under.  After a pair of pars to open his back nine, he bogeyed 12 and 13 to drop to one-over, but back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 and a par on 18 got him to the clubhouse in red numbers and a five-way tie for sixth place, just two shots out of the lead.

The Spartans, the defending WAC Champions, finished at eight-over 286 on the day and are in sixth place among 10 teams vying for this year’s title and the conference’s automatic bid the NCAA Championship.

Cody Blick, the best rated player in the field according to Golfstat.com at #239, carded three birdies on his opening nine holes and made the turn of the 7,313-yard, par 72 course, at three-under, in a tie for second place.  The back nine proved to be more challenging.  He gave back the birdies with bogeys at 11, 16 and 18 and carded an even par 72.  He is in a three-way tie for 11th place.

Daniel Semmler went out in 38 and came home with the same score for a four-over 76.  On both sides he recorded three bogeys before closing with a birdie on eight and another on 18.  He is in a tie for 28th place.

Connor Covington closed his opening round with birdies at 17 and 18 to card a five-over 77.  He went out in four-over and after a double-bogey at 12 found himself at plus seven for the day before his birdie, birdie finish.  He sits in a 34th place tie.

Justin Estrada recorded a one birdie, on the fifth hole, and was even par through six, but couldn’t get anything going after that and finished with a six-over 78 and in a tie for 38th place.

New Mexico State leads after 18 holes with a two-under 286 and have a six-shot lead over second place Utah State.  UTSA’s J.J. Lindsey shot the low round of the day, a three-under 69 and leads a group of four players at two-under.

The second round is Tuesday, April 30 with the day’s first tee time set for 7:00 a.m.  The Spartans first tee time will be 8:20 a.m. Fans can follow the action at golfstat.com.
