Stallworth Up To 7th;Team Tied For 5th At WAC

Stephan Stallworth was one of only six in the 45-player field to match or better par in the second round of the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championship.

Stallworth posted an even-par 72 for a 149 total at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. He is in a seventh place tie and is 10 strokes behind tournament leader Troy Merritt of Boise State. Merritt has a 139 score after two rounds.

In the team race, the Spartans find themselves in a fifth-place tie with Nevada at 615.

“Stephan and Rosco (Valentine) played quite well. It was tough out there. This is a team deal. We need a couple more good scores tomorrow,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday, who got a 75 from Valentine for the team’s second-best score of the day.

“I felt like things were going quite well. The guys came ready to play. It looks like the 11th hole hit us (four bogeys and a double bogey). Somehow, we let our momentum stop.”

New Mexico State has a team total of 588 on the par 72 Cinnabar Hills Golf Club course. Boise State turned in the best team score of the second round with a 294 and has a 591 total heading into the final round on April 30. Fresno State is in third place at 601, 13 strokes behind New Mexico State.

The championship concludes with a final 18 on April 30. There is no admission charge to attend the championship. Live scoring is available at
