San Jose, Calif.-----Rosco Valentine, Stephan Stallworth, Miguel Camitoc and Mark Hubbard all are in the top-25 after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship held at the Cinnabar Hills Golf Club.
Valentine was the low Spartan for the first 18 holes with a four-over par 76. Stallworth, Camitoc and Hubbard each signed for a 77 on the combined Mountain and Lake course layout at Cinnabar.
As a team, San Jose State finds itself fourth in the nine-team championship with a 307 score. New Mexico State grabbed the lead with a 286. Fresno State at 297 and Fresno State at 305 also are ahead of the Spartans.
“They played a little better than they scored today. We still haven’t clicked in the scoring column. There were some errant shots and some tough putts. They need to regroup and put a round together tomorrow. It’s one day at time. It’s not over yet," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.
"The course is in phenomenal shape. The greens are just amazing. We couldn’t ask for anything better. This is going to reveal the best player and the best team."
New Mexico State's Joshua Stewart is the first-round individual leader with a 67. Troy Merritt of Boise State at 68 and Kevin Lozares of New Mexico State with a 69 are the only other players under par heading into the second round on April 29.
The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on April 30.
