Spartans Bear Down On WAC Championship

A season featuring three San Jose State tournament victories and multiple broken scoring records has boiled down to the Western Athletic Conference Championship being held April 30-May 2 in Henderson, Nev.

The Spartans return to the 7,313-yard par 72 Rio Secco Golf Club where they finished second at the 2011 WAC Championship, their best result since joining the conference in 1996.

#77-San Jose State is the second-highest rated WAC team according to the April 25 GolfStat team rankings, trailing only #70-Louisiana Tech. Other WAC ranks include: #81-Nevada, #115-New Mexico State, #136-Idaho, #146-Hawaii, #156-Fresno State and #227-Utah State.

Head coach John Kennaday in his seventh season has team stroke-average leader Jay Myers (71.67) heading the Spartan lineup for the championship. Matthew Hovan (72.79), Justin Estrada (72.76), Christopher Lang (74.42) and Connor Covington (74.44) join Myers in the lineup.

"We're looking forward to a solid competition at this year's championship," said Kennaday. "We have to stick to our game plan and just play tough."

New Mexico State enters the contest as the four-time defending team champion. The Aggies' Justin Shin is GolfStat's top-ranked individual from the WAC at #41. #105-Jarred Bossio of Idaho follows Shin and Myers at #137 rounds out the top-three WAC men's golfers.

The 54-hole tournament is spread across three days with 18 holes played on each. Tee times featuring twosomes will begin at 7:00 a.m. each day and live statistics will be available throughout the championship at
