San Jose, Calif. - The San José State men's golf team competes in its first Mountain West Conference Golf Championship this Friday through Sunday at the nationally recognized Omni Tucson National Golf Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
The 54-hole event will be contested on the Robert Van Hagge and Bruce Devlin designed Catalina Course, which has been selected one of Golf Digest's "75 Best Golf Resort Courses in North America" and has hosted over 30 PGA Tour events. Teams will play 18 holes a day on the 7,144-yard, par 71 track.
Head coach John Kennaday, in his ninth season, has team and conference stroke-average leader Cody Blick (70.62) heading the Spartan lineup for the event. Justin Estrada (73.07), Daniel Semmler (75.23), Marcus Potter (75.25) and Felix Möesmang (76.71) join Blick in the lineup.
Friday's opening-round tee times begin at 7:00 a.m., with the Spartans first player going off at 8:40 a.m.
First Round Pairings:
Group 1: 7:00-7:40 a.m. - New Mexico, UNLV
Group 2: 7:50-8:30 a.m. - San Diego State, Nevada, Colorado State
Group 3: 8:40-9:20 a.m. - San José State, Air Force, Fresno State
Group 4: 9:30-10:10 a.m. - Wyoming, Boise State, Utah State
The total score for each team each day will determine groups for the second and third rounds. Teams in ninth, 10th, and 11th place will be grouped together and have the first set of tee times, followed by teams 6, 7, and 8 with the second set of tee times. Teams 3, 4, and 5 will have the third set of tee times followed by teams 1 and 2 with the final tee times.
The Championship features five players ranked in the Golfstat top-100 (4/15/14) led by New Mexico's Gavin Green (#33), Blick (#35), San Diego State's Xander Schauffele (#47) and UNLV's Kurt Kitayama (#66) as well as New Mexico's Victor Perez (#99).
