Exciting Finish At The Western; Spartans Ninth

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The 66th Annual Western Intercollegiate came down to the wire as many of the nation's top amateurs battled for team and individual champion honors during the final three holes. 


#1-ranked Texas shot six-over par as a team on Sunday and held off #14-ranked Stanford in the end for a four-stroke victory. 


Host San Jose State University finished in ninth place at +73, shooting 380-369-374-1,123 on the 6,615-yard par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Club.


Christopher Lang for the second time this season was the Spartans' low-man at the conclusion of the tournament. Lang shot a 73 on Sunday bringing his total to 219 (+9).


Stroke-average leader Jay Myers and teammate Matthew Hovan finished one shot apart at 220 and 221 respectively. Myers finished in a tie for 28th while Hovan was tied for 30th.


Connor Covington shot 223 (+13) and finished in a tie for 36th as an individual entry for the Spartans.


Also for San Jose State, Justin Estrada shot a 231 (+21), Nick Brown shot 235 (+25) and Daniel Semmler finished with 238 (+28).


"This tournament was a great success," said Spartans' head coach John Kennaday. "We wish that we could have performed a little better, but overall it was a great weekend here at Pasatiempo."


Patrick Rodgers of Stanford secured victory with a birdie on the 18th hole and slipped on the Blue Jacket as the 2012 Western Intercollegiate champion. Rodgers, ranked number-two in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) won by two strokes over #1-ranked Patrick Cantlay of UCLA and New Mexico State's Justin Shin who tied for second.


Next up for San Jose State, the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on April 23-24. It will be the Spartans' last competition before the Western Athletic Conference Championship.
