Spartans Eighth; Estrada, Semmler T17 At Western

Santa Cruz, Calif. – The San Jose State men’s golf team played round one of the 67th Transamerica/WFG Western Intercollegiate in one-over 351 and were in a three-way tie for fourth place, but finished the day in eighth place (731, +31) after two rounds.

The Spartans took advantage of relatively calm conditions in the morning.  Justin Estrada, opened his day with a 68 (-2) carding five birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. In the afternoon, he was only able to get one birdie.  He also recorded four bogeys and a double bogey to finish the day in a tie for 17th place (143, +3).

Daniel Semmler is also in 17th place, (143, +3).  He shot an even-par 70 with four birdies and four bogeys in round one.  He had three birdies and as many bogeys in the second round, but a triple bogey on the 11th was the difference on his card.

Three birdies and five bogeys set Connor Covington at (+2, 72) after round-one. He played round two in +3, 73 with four bogeys and a birdie.  Covington is at 145 (+5) and in a tie for 31st place.

Cody Blick shot the Spartans lowest round of the day, a three-under 67 in round one after carding five birdies and two bogeys.  Round two was a 10-over 80 and Blick currently sits in a tie for 41st place (147, +7).

Landon Polterock had a birdie in round one on his way to a 74 (+4).  His second round also had a birdie, but he carded a 79 (+9) and is in a tie for 71st place (153, +13).

With a 76 and 81, Taylor Bromley is in a tie for 84th at 17-over (157). Bromley carded the team’s only eagle of the day, a three on the 502-yard, ninth hole, but his up and down card only had seven pars.  He added a birdie on the second hole in round two, but came home with  an 81.

Scores were higher in the afternoon round. Twenty-one players broke par in the first round, but with gusting winds, there were only four under par scores in round two.

UCLA leads with a 702 (+2) and have a nine-shot lead over California 711 (+11).  Pontus Widegren is the low individual 135 (-5).

The final 18 holes take place Sunday, April 14. The shotgun start is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. Live scoring is available at
