Tempe, Ariz.----The Spartans knocked 12 strokes off their second round score and moved up to 12th place after 36 holes at the 39th annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational.
The Spartans finished Day 1 on the par 71 Karsten Golf Course, 24-over par 592.
"We didn't come out of the gate very good today," said head coach John Kennaday after the Spartans posted a first round 18-over par 302. "We weren't as ready as we should have been and that's on me."
All five Spartans tied or significantly improved their afternoon scores and San Jose State posted a second round 6-over par 290.
"The guys played well in the afternoon," said Kennaday. "I'm very proud on how they were able to bounce back."
Matthew Hovan landed a top- 25 position, one-over par 71 in both rounds tying for 22nd place at 144.
"He (Hovan) has been working hard and it's really starting to show on the golf course," added Kennaday on Hovan's team leading score.
Southern California held a comfortable lead over the 13-team field with a 558 and San Diego State trailed in second at 567. Rounding out the top three, Florida State and Pepperdine tied with a 573.
Nick Delio out of CSU Northridge led the 75-player field posting a 137. In second, Steve Lim from Southern California posted a 138. Zahkai Brown (Colorado State), Max Homa (California), Matt Siporin (CSU Northridge) and J.J. Spaun (San Diego State) finished in a four-way tie for third place with a 139.
Mark Hubbard and Jay Myers tied for 45th after posting a 148. Hubbard improved his shot by eight strokes posting a 78 first-round and a 70 second-round, while Myers kept consistent with 74's.
Drew Nottenkamper and Daniel Semmler posted scores of 152 and 155. Nottenkamper finished the day in a tie for 62nd place with a 78 and 74, while Semmler posted a 78 and 77 tying for 68th place. Playing as an individual entry, Nick Brown placed 70th posting a 78 in both rounds for a 156.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by Arizona State concludes Sunday, April 10 with 18 holes. Live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
