Men's Golf Ninth at UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Classic

Columbia, Mo.-----Completing the UMB Bank-Mizzou Tiger Classic men’s golf tournament under clearly inclement conditions, San Jose State finished ninth.

Only one-third of the field was able to post a better final round score than in the previous day’s afternoon 18 and just one player in 63 bettered par. Twenty-one golfers were resigned to scores of 80 or higher.

The Spartans finished with a 922 team score for 54 holes on the par 72, 7,221 yard course at The Club at Old Hawthorne. Indiana built enough of a lead after the first two rounds and was a five-stroke winner over Kansas State, second at 886 and the only team with a team score under 300 (295) in the final round.

“This was the worst weather I’ve seen for golf. It poured. We waited an hour and then we played through it,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday about the last 18 holes of competition. “We obviously didn’t play well, but we need to play to get better.”

Indiana’s Jorge Campillo captured medalist honors after finishing at four-under par 212. Michigan State’s Randy Hutchison was the only other player in the 63-player field to finish under par at 217.

Stephan Stallworth posted San Jose State’s bet individual score with a 228 and tied for 29th place.

San Jose State returns to action, April 19 & 20, at the U.S. Collegiate invitational hosted by Stanford at the Stanford University Golf Course. There is no admission charge and free parking near the course is available.
