Men's Golf Finishes 14th At Wyoming Cowboy Classic

Scottsdale, Ariz.-----Freshmen Jay Myers and Nick Brown led the way for San Jose State University with scores of even par 70 and one-over 71, respectively, in the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.

Both players completed their last 36 holes in one-over par after rough starts on April 6. Brown shot a 75 on the par 72, 7,133-yard Talking Stick Golf Course. Myers opened with an 81 and was one of two Spartans to improve, score-wise, from the first through third rounds. Nick Podesta, playing in his first tournament of the season, was the other.

“Everybody bounced back. They all worked well together. Other than the first round, this would have been a great trip. They battled hard,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday.

Mark Hubbard was San Jose State’s top finisher tying for 22nd place at three-over par 213. Hubbard shot the Spartans’ best 18 hole score of the tournament, a three-under 67 in the April 5 morning round.

“Mark saved us. He played well the entire tournament,” Kennaday said.

As a team, San Jose State started and finished the final round in 14th place in the 20-team tournament. Gonzaga moved ahead of the Spartans’ 875 total with an 871 for 13th place and Old Dominion, tied with San Jose State dropped back to 15th place.

UC Davis won the Wyoming Cowboy Classic for the third year in a row. The Aggies posted an 825 total and outdistanced runner up Oregon State, which finished at 841.

San Jose State returns to action, Monday, April 27, as one of nine teams competing for the 2009 Western Athletic Conference championship at the Rio Secco Golf Course in Henderson, Nev.

“We’ve got a multitude of possible lineups. It’s going to come down to whom wants it the most. That’s who will end up playing for us (at the WAC Championship),” the Spartans coach concluded.
