Spartans Need A Lift At U.S. Intercollegiate

STANFORD, Calif. -- The San Jose State men's golf team finds itself in a tie for 14th place out of 17 teams after the first round of play at the 2012 U.S. Intercollegiate on March 30.


The Spartans shot 294 (+14) as a team on the 6,742-yard Par 70 Stanford Golf Course, and trail #12-ranked Oregon in first place by 22 strokes. 


"We're really close as a team to putting together a solid round," said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday. "We'll go out there again tomorrow and give it our best."


Jay Myers and Matthew Hovan each shot a three-over par 73 in the opening round and were San Jose State's low scores of the day. The two seniors are in a tie for 47th place with seven other players in the field.


Justin Estrada and Daniel Semmler both turned in a 74 (+4) and are tied for 56th place. Also for the Spartans, Christopher Lang shot a 77 (+7) and is in 80th place.


Fresno State's Rufie Fessler holds the individual lead after firing a five-under 65 in round one. He leads Nick Chianello of Oregon and Matt Hansen of UC Davis by one stroke.


The U.S. Intercollegiate continues Saturday with 18 holes and concludes Sunday with one final round. Live statistics for the tournament are available via www.golfstat.com.
