Men's Golf Stays 12th At Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.-----On a day when the ocean breezes came ashore taking shots to un-welcomed sites and scores to un-welcomed heights, the San Jose State University men’s golf team went along for the ride. The Spartans remain in 12th place heading into the final round of the 63rd annual Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

San Jose State has a 36-hole total of 611 on the par 70, 6,511-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course after posting a 310 team score for the second round. Rosco Valentine’s 76 was the best by one of the five Spartans competing in the team competition. Mark Hubbard, who began the day tied for third at one-under par, posted an 80. San Jose State also counted 77’s from Jay Myers and Stephan Stallworth on a day when the average score for the 93-players in the field was 78.16. The Spartans did not count Aaron Conrad’s 82 in their team scoring for round two.

Fresno State, the first round leader, was not immune to the high scoring of the day, but stayed in first place with a 579 total. Oregon moved into second place with the second best team score of the round, a 13-over 293, and is at 583. Colorado, at 585, Michigan State, at 587, and Denver, at 589, round out the top five teams in the 18-team field and are in legitimate contention for the team championship.

Hubbard remains the top San Jose State player in the individual race at 149. He is tied for 22nd place.

Oregon State’s Diego Velasquez posted the best 18-hole score of the tournament, a four-under par 66, to vault into first place at even par 140. Velasquez was the only player under par in the second round. He takes a one-shot lead into the final 18 holes over first-round co-leader Pat Grady of Colorado who is at 141 after a 73.

Bhavik Patel of Fresno State, who shared the first-round individual lead with Grady, shot a 76 and is tied for fifth place at 144. Klinton Krieger of Denver and Andrew Vijarro of Oregon are tied for third at 143.

The final 18 holes on March 31 begin at 9:00 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring is available at
