Santa Barbara, Calif.----Mark Hubbard led the way in the OGIO-Santa Barbara Intercollegiate men's golf tournament, posting a team-high three-over par 147, as the Spartans tie for fifth place after 36 holes.
The Spartans finished Day 1 on the par 72 Sandpiper Golf Course, 22-over par 598, for a three-way tie with University of the Pacific and Southern Utah.
Oregon, ranked No. 27 nationally, built up a comfortable lead posting 15-under par 561. The host UC Santa Barbara, trailed by 19 strokes with 580 and conference foe Fresno State rounded out the top three posting 592.
In the first round of action the Spartans posted a team score 13-over par 301 and found themselves in a three-way tie with Sacramento State and Southern Utah for the seventh position in the 16-team field. They were just five strokes short from Long Beach State with 296 for third place.
For the second tournament in a row, Hubbard posted a team-leading one-under par 71 in the first round, good for a two-way tie for eighth place in the 87-player field. Hubbard's second round 76 put him in 16th place with 147.
“Mark put in a very courageous 36 holes of golf today,” stated head coach John Kennaday. “He stuck in there and really came through for the team.”
Daniel Semmler and Jay Myers posted scores of 149 and 152. Semmler finished the day at 26th place with 76 and 73, while Myers tied for 37th place after posting a morning round 81 followed with an afternoon 71.
“Both Daniel and Jay played well today and really helped us down the stretch,” added Kennaday. “Jay bounced back in the second round and Daniel was consistent throughout.”
Matthew Hovan, tied for 44th place with 154, posted 73 and 81. The two remaining players, Miguel Camitoc and Nick Brown, posted 161 and 163. Camitoc finished tied for 77th place, posting an early round 84 followed with a second round 77. Brown, playing as an individual entry, tied for 83rd with 80 and 83.
"Today we didn’t feel we played our best golf,” said Kennaday. “We just have to play a lot better tomorrow and we are definitely looking forward to another day.”
The two-day, 54-hole tournament hosted by the UC Santa Barbara concludes Tuesday, March 29 with 18 holes.
