Santa Barbara, Calif.----Jay Myers posted two-under par and tied for the best individual round on Day 2 of the OGIO-Santa Barbara Intercollegiate men's golf tournament.
As a team, San Jose State posted an 897 team score and finished in the top-half of the field at sixth place on the par 72 Sandpiper Golf Course. This was the Spartans third consecutive tournament with a sixth place finish in the month of March.
Oregon led all teams with 12-under par 852 in the 16-team field that included five teams ranked in the top-100. Host UC Santa Barbara posted 879 and conference rival Fresno State finished with 885.
"The course was difficult for us today," said head coach John Kennaday. "This wasn't our best golf and we need to figure out a way to do better."
The Spartans were just three strokes from landing a fourth spot position with University of the Pacific at 894, while Cal State Northridge notched a 5th spot posting 895.
Myers was one of only five players to post an under par round for Day 2 in the 87-player field. Overall, Myers led the Spartans posting 6-over par 222, tying for 16th place and three strokes from a top-10 finish. Mark Hubbard joined Myers in the top-20 for a tie at 20th place with 225. Both Matthew Hovan and Daniel Semmler tied at 29th place after posting 227 and Miguel Camitoc posted 241 for a tie at 75th place. Brown, playing as an individual entry, tied for 83rd posting 246.
Both Daniel Miernicki and Jack Dukeminier of Oregon led the pack, posting 4-under par 212.
"This was a great experience for our guys," added Kennaday. "We will regroup and get going towards ASU and figure out what we need to do."
The Spartans will have the weekend off, and then play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on April 9 and 10 in Tempe, Arizona.
