Hubbard Tied For 3rd At Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.-----Mark Hubbard is one of only six players under par after the first round of the 63rd annual Western Intercollegiate men's golf tournament. The sophomore from Denver, Colo., fired a one-under par 69 on the par 70, 6,511-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course and is tied for third place.

Hubbard stroked two birdies on the front nine and eagled the par-5, 13th hole en route to his 69. He trails Colorado's Pat Grady and Fresno State's Bhavik Patel, both of whom signed for a two-under par 68.

San Jose State's other four players counting to the team score did not fare as well. Jay Myers and Rosco Valentine each posted a 77 and Aaron Conrad and Stephan Stallworth both shot a 78. Ryan Collins, Nick Brown and Matthew Hovan, playing as individuals, each had a 75, but none of their scores count in the team scoring format.

The Spartans have a team score of 301 and are 12th in the 18-team field. Fresno State, with Michael Gideon and Bryan Hogan under par with Patel and tied with Hubbard at 69, is the team leader at two-under par 278. Colorado is second at 283, five strokes behind. Oregon and Michigan State are tied for third at 290.

Defending team champion Saint Mary's is 11th at 298. Jack Newman of Michigan State, the 2008 Western Intercollegiate medalist, opened the 54-hole tournament with a three-over par 73 and is tied for 24th place.
