Stanford, Calif. – Cody Blick birdied five of his final six holes, is at four-under and in a tie for first place, after the opening round of the 45th U.S. Intercollegiate Golf Tournament.
Cody Blick who had his best collegiate finish earlier this week, second place at the Duck Invitational, continued his good play on the par-70, 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course. After making the turn at one-over, he attacked the back nine. He carded six birdies and one bogey coming home in shooting a 66, his lowest round of the year.
Eagling the par-5, 501-yard first hole and picking up two more birdies in the front nine, Justin Estrada was at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day. A birdie on the 12th got him to five under, but a pair of bogeys on his last two holes left him in a tie for 10th at three-under (67) and one stroke off the lead.
Daniel Semmler went out in two-over with two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on his opening nine holes. He came home in one-under with a birdie and eight pars to card a one-over 71 and in a tie for 31st place.
Taylor Bromley, playing as an individual, equaled his best round of the year with a one-over 71. He had two birdies on each side. Through seven holes he was one-under, then bogeys on four of his next five holes left him as three-over. Bromley bounced back with birdies on the 14th and 18th for a 71 and along with Semmler is in a tie for 31st place.
In 49th place, Connor Covington recorded three birdies in his first seven holes, but bogeys on eight and nine left him at one-under at the turn. Covington birdied the 11th to get to two-under, but four bogeys coming home got him to the clubhouse at two-over (72).
Landon Polterock started the front and back nine with four and five straight pars, respectively. However, both sides home holes proved to be more challenging. He was three-over in his final five holes on the front and two-over on his last four holes on the back for a five-over 75 and in a tie for 76th place.
The Spartans carded 22 birdies on the day and finished at four-under (267). They are in fifth place, four strokes out of the lead. Stanford’s Cardinal team leads the way at eight-under (272).
