Men's Golf Finishes 12th At Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.-----The world-renowned Pasatiempo Golf Course again was the winner as some of the top collegiate players tackled the par 70, 6,511-yard course for two very different late March days. A bright and sunny day drenched 90 golfers for 36 holes and preceded a chilling breeze from the Pacific Ocean for the final round.

Host San Jose State finished 12th in a 16-team field at the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament. The Spartans had a team total of 912 after a final round 307 score, San Jose State’s average player score was slightly better than that of the entire field which averaged 77.36 strokes for the last 18 holes.

For the second year in a row, a freshman was San Jose State’s top finisher. Peter Gibbs posted a final round 75 for a 226 total and 32nd place. Redshirt freshman Ryan Collins, playing as an individual entry, tied for 36th at 228. Stephan Stallworth, who was the team’s top finisher at last year’s event, tied for 50th at 231 with a final round 76.

Saint Mary’s College held off #23-ranked Michigan State and UC Irvine over the final three holes to win the team title. Michigan State’s Jack Newman captured individual honors.

The Gaels totaled 880 while Michigan State and UC Irvine tied for second at 881. Saint Mary’s began the final round 14 strokes behind Michigan State.

Newman, a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa, won with a final-round 78 for a four-over par 214 total. He finished two strokes ahead of Saint Mary’s senior Mike McRae, the second-round leader.

“We made a step forward today with our play. It didn’t entirely show up on the scoreboard, but you could see it,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday, who didn’t have Rosco Valentine for all 18 holes of the final round. A wrist problem led to a Valentine withdrawal after his drive on the 5th hole. The San Jose State junior was tied for 10th place after two rounds.

“We got into some projects, mentally and physically as it pertains to golf, after San Diego. It may have been too early to see a significant difference in this tournament. But, I believe we are making strides.”

San Jose State returns to action, Monday, April 7, at the Missouri Tiger Invitational hosted by the University of Missouri.
