Eugene, Ore. – San Jose State men’s golfer Cody Blick shot an even-par 72 in the final round of the 2013 Duck Invitational and finished in a tie for second place, his best result as a collegiate.
Blick recorded three birdies and three bogeys on his opening nine holes of the 7,020-yard, par-72, Robert Trent Jones designed Eugene Country Club course. He came home with a birdie and a bogey for a 72, a three-round total of 210 and a tie for second place. It is his second top-five finish of the year.
“I’m happy for Cody,” head coach John Kennaday said. “He stuck to the game plan and the result speaks for itself.”
The Spartans finished in eighth place with rounds of 298, 289 and 294 for an 881 total (+17). It’s the team’s sixth top-10 finish of the year.
“It was a difficult course today,” Kennaday said. “The pin placements were very difficult enough. Then you add rain and it was really tough. It wasn’t easy but we stuck with the plan and our guys stepped up at the right time.”
Connor Covington, who began the day in a tie for 43rd place, had a bogey on his second hole, but came back on the next hole with an eagle. Four holes later, a birdie got him to two-under, but he made the turn at one-under after a bogey on his ninth hole. On his back nine he carded one birdie, which was sandwiched between a pair of bogeys and finished with an even-par 72. He completed the tournament at 221 (+5) and finished in a tie for 27th place.
Justin Estrada struggled on the day recording five bogeys in round of 77. He entered Tuesday in a 28th place tie at two-over, but his five-over par third round left him with a three-round total of 223 (+7) and in a tie for 37th place.
Daniel Semmler recorded a double bogey on his opening hole and made the turn at three-over. He was still at three-over through 16, but another double bogey and bogey on his closing holes left him at six-over 78, a three-round total of 232 (+16) and in a tie for 75th.
Improving his score with each round, Landon Polterock carded a one-over 73 on Tuesday and moved from a tie for 74th place to tie for 62nd and a three-round total of 229 (+13). He had one bogey on his outward nine and another on his 10th hole before birding his 17th.
Oregon defended its 2012 Duck Invitational title with rounds of 282, 285 and 291 for an 858 total (-6) and a three shot advantage over second-place SMU. Jonathan Woo, also of Oregon, was the individual medalist shooting rounds of 67, 69 and 72 for a 208 (-8) total.
The Spartans will have two days off and then will compete in the U.S. Intercollegiate this Thursday through Saturday, March 28-30 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. Fans can follow the action at www.golfgamebook.com/collegegolf.
