Men's Golf 10th At Western Intercollegiate

Santa Cruz, Calif.-----Michigan State’s Jack Newman was one of two players to post under-par scores in the morning and afternoon rounds leading the Spartans to the top spot in the team standings after 36 holes of the 62nd annual Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament.

“Our guys played well. The course is in fantastic shape,” said Michigan State coach Sam Puryear, who has three players in the top-10 in the individual standings. “San Jose State has done an unbelievable job preparing the tournament. We have a great field and an incredible golf course. We’re excited. We feel fortunate to be leading after the first day. We could still be better. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow.”

Michigan State has a 567 total on the par 70 Pasatiempo Golf Course. Saint Mary’s is second at 581, 14 shots behind. California is third at 585 in the 16-team field.

Host San Jose State, third after the first round, is in 10th place heading into the final 18 holes.

“There’s a lot that goes into a team playing well together and we need to learn how to catch that momentum to continue on for 36 holes. This golf course is a great test. It isn’t just ball-striking, the mental game or any one thing. It’s a combination of things you need to put together as a player. We’re getting closer to putting that combination together,” said San Jose State coach John Kennaday whose lineup includes three freshmen. “We don’t have a player in the lineup with 20 collegiate tournaments under their belt yet. It’s a learning experience and I hope we learn.”

Saint Mary’s Mike McRae is the individual leader with a five-under par 135. He opened the tournament with a four-under par 66 and was tied for the lead with Missouri’s Will Harrold after 18 holes. McRae, who had nine birdies on the day, added an afternoon score of 69 while Harrold faded with a 78 in the afternoon.

Michigan State’s Newman is second at 136. None of the other 88 players in the 90-player field is under par. Payne Gniewek of Michigan State is third at one-over par 141.

The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on March 27. Live scoring can be viewed on
