Western Intercollegiate Features 11 Top-100 Teams

Eleven of the top-100 teams in the country are among the 18-team field competing for top honors at the 63rd annual Western Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament hosted by San Jose State University. This year’s Western Intercollegiate begins Sunday, March 29, and concludes Tuesday, March 31, at the world-renowned Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Saint Mary’s (#158) is the defending team champion and the Gaels face stiff competition to repeat in 2009. Fresno State, ranked 86th in the March 25 GolfStat poll, is the last back-to-back winner of the longest-running men’s golf college tournament west of the Mississippi River with first place finishes in 1989 and 1990.

Cal (#35), which claimed the 1950 Western Intercollegiate, is the top-ranked team in the field that will battle the par 70, 6,511-yard Alister MacKenzie designed course. Michigan State (#38), Oregon (#56), Colorado (#59), Denver (#63), Nevada (#73), Oregon State (#74), Mercer (#79), UC Santa Barbara (#89) and Pacific (#97) are ranked in the top-100.

Every year, the Western Intercollegiate attracts teams from across the country. Besides Mercer, Brown (#260) is the second Ivy League school in the last two years to participate. Kansas (#112) makes its annual trip to the West Coast for the Western Intercollegiate.

Long Beach State (#111), Santa Clara (#133), Wyoming (#187) and host San Jose State (#101) round out the field. The Spartans, as host, have 12 Western Intercollegiate titles and seek their first since 1994 when current PGA Tour player Arron Oberholser was a freshman. Oberholser went on to capture the 50th Western Intercollegiate as a junior in 1996 against a field that included Stanford’s Tiger Woods.

Each team will field five players for each of the three 18-hole rounds. The best four scores from each team each day will count to the team total. All 93 players in the field are eligible for individual medalist honors.

Play begins each morning at 9:00 a.m. in a shotgun start format. There is no charge to watch in person and parking is available at one of the three Pasatiempo Golf Course parking lots. Daily live scoring courtesy of GolfStat is available by clicking here.
