Spartans 12th at Duck Invitational; Stallworth Ties For 16th

Junction City, Ore.-----Jay Myers regained his form in the final round and Stephan Stallworth turned in his best finish of the season highlighting San Jose State University's play at the Oregon Duck Invitational men's golf tournament.

In the coldest conditions of the two-day, 54-hole event, Myers was one of just 17 players to match or better par with an even par 72 on the 7,020-yard Shadow Hills Country Club course. There were few scores of par or lower in the third round than in either of the previous two.

Myers' 72 was his fifth round in the last seven in which he posted an 18-hole score of par or lower. His eight-stroke improvement from round two to round three was best in the 84-player field and helped him finish tied for 31st place at 222.

Stallworth shot a final round 75 for a 219 total to lead San Jose State. The senior from San Diego tied for 16th place, his first top-20 finish of the season.

"Stephan played well for the whole tournament; and Jay and Mark (Hubbard) played well (today)," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.

Nark Hubbard, at 226; Rosco Valentine, 228; Christopher Lang, 231; and Nick Brown, 232, rounded the Spartan scores.

"We're still too inconsistent and on too much of a roller coaster. We have to get a hold of ourselves, get control of our emotions to better manage our way around a course and put up more consistent scores," Kennaday added.

Oregon's Daniel Miernicki shot the low round of the tournament in the final round with a five-under par 67 to take medalist honors with a 209 and lead the host Ducks to the team title. Only 12 players finished at par 216 or better.

In the team competition, Oregon's 1073 was seven strokes better than first-round leader Arkansas which finished at 1080. Oregon State was third at 1088. San Jose State was 12th at 1121.

The Spartans return to action Friday, March 26, at the three-day, 54-hole Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. In the five-player, score four format, Stallworth, Myers, Hubbard, Valentine and Brown will be the San Jose State team.

"This will be a phenomenal tournament at a phenomenal site. It will be a real treat for us to play in this top-level field," stated the San Jose State coach.
