Stallworth 17th; Spartans, 11th At Duck Invitational

Junction City, Ore.-----Stephan Stallworth had his best 36 holes of the 2009-10 season posting an even par 144 to lead San Jose State University in first-day action at the Oregon Duck Invitational men's golf tournament.

Stallworth opened the day with a one-under par 71 and followed up with a 73 for his 144 on the par 72, 7020 yard Shadow Hills Country Club course. In the 84-player field, the San Jose State senior is in 17th place and just four strokes out of first place entering the final round scheduled for March 23.

In the team competition, the Spartans are in 11th place with a 746 total. With Stallworth and sophomore Jay Myers leading the way with 71's, San Jose State was tied for seventh place after 18 holes. The Spartans slipped in round two with none of their six players posting a score at level or under par. Stallworth and Mark Hubbard had the best scores for San Jose State in round two with their 73's.

After Stallworth, Myers and Rosco Valentine are next at 150. Myers ballooned to a 79 in the afternoon round ending a streak of five rounds of no worse than one-over par golf. Valentine cut two strokes off his opening round 76.

"Stephan has been putting good things together of late and I was tickled to see him be rewarded. He's been a big part of our team for a long time and it was great to see him do it on the golf course today the way he wants to do it," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday.

Mark Hubbard made the biggest improvement by a San Jose State player from morning to afternoon finishing with a 73 after opening play with a 79. Hubbard's 152 is two shots ahead of Nick Brown's 154 and Christopher Lang's 155 in the six-player, score-five format.

"The guys have been working very hard and it was a good test of golf, but we shot ourselves in the foot again. It was one thing after another," the Spartans' coach said about the team's overall first-day performance.

Host Oregon grabbed the team lead from Arkansas with a four-under 356 in the afternoon for a 715 total. Arkansas is close behind at 717. Oregon State at 726 is in third and still has an outside chance to overtake both Oregon and Arkansas.
