Men's Golf Finishes 6th At Barona Collegiate Cup

Lakeside, Calif.-----Aaron Conrad turned in his best 18-hole score since the 2006-07 season with a four-under par 68 highlighting San Jose State University’s sixth-place finish the Barona Collegiate Cup men’s golf tournament.

Conrad, a senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., had four birdies and an eagle on the par 72, 7,393-yard Barona Creek Golf Club course. The last time he posted an 18-hole score lower than 70 was a three-under par 68 at the Meadow Club Course in Corte Madera, Calif., during the October 2006 Alister MacKenzie Invitational. His 54-hole total of even par 216 was good for 20th place and was tops among the six Spartans in the tournament.

“Aaron didn’t get rewarded for his play yesterday, but he played well the entire tournament,” said San Jose State head coach John Kennaday.

As a team, the Spartans started the day sixth and stayed there. San Jose State had its best 18-hole team score of the tournament in the final round with a two-under par 358 for a 1,093 total. Again, the Spartans had plenty of under par holes, 23 birdies and three eagles in the last 18, but could not make up enough ground on the top five teams in the 10-team tournament.

“Our level of focus was much better today. There were a lot fewer distractions and we played hard,” added Kennaday whose team racked up 64 birdies and four eagles. “We have a team that likes to bomb the driver, but we need to stay in game plan more and handle crises better. Then, we’ll keep climbing the leaderboard.”

Colorado State began the final round in fourth place and turned in the tournament’s best team score, a 20-under par 340, to capture top honors with a 1,051 total. The victorious Rams weren’t far superior to San Jose State when it came to under par holes with 73 birdies and two eagles, but stayed away from trouble better with just eight double bogeys in 324 holes of play.

Host San Diego State and New Mexico matched par in the final and finished second and third at 1,057 and 1,069, respectively.

Second-round co-leader Dustin Morris of Colorado State was the medalist with a 203 total that included a final round 66. He was three strokes better than New Mexico’s Steve Saunders, who finished second at 206. First-day co-leaders Matt Hoffenberg of San Diego State and Blake Trimble of San Diego finished at 209 and 210, respectively.

The Spartans return to action, Sunday, March 28, hosting the three-day, 54-hole 63rd annual Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.
