Men's Golf 6th At Barona Collegiate Cup After 36

Lakeside, Calif.-----Five of the six San Jose State golfers posted one score of par or better helping the Spartans to a sixth-place start at the 2009 Barona Collegiate Cup men’s tournament at the Barona Creek Golf Club.

Mark Hubbard turned in the best score by a San Jose State player on the par 72, 7,393-yard course with a three-under 69 in the afternoon round on March 16. He had four birdies and one bogey to offset a morning round 82 that included five birdies and only four pars. His 13-stroke improvement from round one to two was the most by any of the 66 players.

Nick Brown also had a big turnaround from the morning to afternoon rounds. He had four birdies and only six pars en route to a 79, but steadied his play in round two with two birdies and an eagle on the par-5 17th hole for a 70 and a 149 total.

The Spartans have a 735 team total in the six-player, score five format.  Host San Diego State is in first place at 697. New Mexico at 709 and Colorado State at 711 have a chance to catch the Aztecs in the March 17 final round. San Diego at 714 and New Mexico State at 720 also are ahead of San Jose State.

Coach John Kennaday’s team could be closer to the top five teams in the 10-field if it was not saddled with a high fifth-player score from either of the first two rounds. None of the teams ahead of San Jose State counted a score of more than three-over par in either round. The Spartans were forced to count Brown’s 79 in the first round and a 76 in the afternoon. San Jose State's 41 birdies and an eagle compare favorably to San Diego State's 48 birdies and two eagles, but the Spartans had 15 holes of double-bogey or higher while the host school and tournament leader had none.

Rosco Valentine turned in San Jose State’s best score of the morning round with a one-under 71. Jay Myers had four birdies in each round, but only has a 148 total and is tied with teammate Aaron Conrad for 32nd place.  Stephan Stallworth, who had scores of 74 and 76, is tied with Valentine in 42nd place at 150. Hubbard is tied for 46th at 151.

Matt Hoffenberg of San Diego State, Dustin Morris of Colorado State and Blake Trimble of San Diego share the individual lead at 137. Twenty of the 66 players are at par or better heading into the final 18 holes on March 17.
