Men's Golf At Barona Collegiate Cup

Quickly back in action after a solid eighth place finish at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on March 10, the San Jose State University men’s golf team is entered in the 2009 Barona Collegiate Cup, March 16-17.

The 54-hole tournament takes place at the par 72, 7,393-yard Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif., 24 miles northeast of San Diego.

This week’s course is considerably longer than the 6,511-yard Belmont Country Club course where the Spartans endured windy conditions that drove the wind chill close to freezing on the final day of competition.

Coach John Kennaday has six golfers with him for the Barona Collegiate Cup. Stephan Stallworth, whose ninth-place tie in Fresno was his first top-10 finish of the season, leads the Spartans’ contingent. Jay Myers, Aaron Conrad, Mark Hubbard, Nick Brown and Rosco Valentine are in the lineup in the six-score-five team format.

The Spartans did not play in last year’s Barona Collegiate Cup. San Jose State’s most recent appearance was in 2006 when Stallworth, as a freshman, placed tenth with a five-under par 211. He opened with a 69 and closed with a 68 to lead the Spartans to a 12th place finish in the 18-team field.

Ten teams including San Jose State and host San Diego State are competing for top honors. Colorado State (#31) and San Diego State (#33) are the top-ranked teams in the field.  New Mexico (#48), University of San Diego (#75) and San Jose State (#98) also are ranked in GolfStat’s top-100. Saint Mary’s (#154), Utah (#173), Texas El Paso (#167) and Wyoming (#188) round out the field.

All players can compete for individual honors and each team will count the best five scores in each round towards the team scoring.

You can follow the action on www.golfstat.com. March 16 tee times start at 7:15 a.m. The Spartans tee off at 8:19 a.m. off of hole #10 and will play continuously until 36 holes are completed. Players will complete the 54-hole tournament with 18 holes on March 17.
