"Jay played a real gutsy tournament under very difficult conditions. It was windy and cold and the conditions took a bit out of everyone. He stuck to his game plan despie the conditions," said San Jose State coach John Kennaday. "His game is coming around again. He and Rosco (Valentine) and Mark (Hubbard) have been working very hard and, for Jay, the results are showing up."
Brigham Young's Robbie Fillmore took individual honors after defeating UC Irvine's John Chin in a one-hole playoff. Both players finished regulation play at five-under par 208. Only four golfers in the 100-player field finished under par.
As a team in the 6-player, score-5 format, San Jose State was 16th in the 16-team field. The Spartans finished with an 1135 total.
"Again, we had a tough first round and that put us behind the 8-ball. We hadsome bright spots othert than Jay. We're learning from our disappointments. We've got to continue to work very hard and we'll be all right," said the San Jose State head coach.
Brigham Young and the University of San Diego both finished with 1085 team totals to tie for first place. Brigham Young took home first place honors winning a one-hole playoff.
